Javier Tebas, president of Spain's professional football league La Liga, met with the Chinese ambassador to Spain on the evening of Oct. 27 to discuss remarks by Kylian Mbappe and explore ways to resolve the issue appropriately.
In a statement issued after the meeting, Tebas said La Liga attaches great importance to its cooperation with China. Over the past several years, the league has maintained close ties with relevant Chinese authorities, football organizations, broadcasters and businesses, making tangible contributions to the development of football in China.
Tebas highlighted the strategic cooperation agreement signed between La Liga and the Chinese Professional Football League, which remains in effect until 2029. He also cited the broadcasting agreement with China Media Group and other joint initiatives as important achievements of the two sides' friendly cooperation.
Tebas stressed that football ties between China and Spain are built on mutual respect, trust and cooperation, and that both sides need to safeguard and strengthen these foundations.
La Liga is committed to continuing to work with its Chinese partners to ensure that individual incidents do not undermine the significant progress already achieved or affect the interest and support of Chinese fans for La Liga matches, he said.
"China is, and will remain, a strategic partner of La Liga," the statement reads.
