A suspected cat poisoning incident was uncovered at Shek Kip Mei Park. A man was caught red-handed by animal welfare organization personnel and cat volunteers while allegedly poisoning cats late at night. Police officers responded to the scene and, after preliminary investigation, found a quantity of rat poison and a fruit knife approximately 14 centimeters long on the 34-year-old suspect, surnamed Ho. Police immediately arrested Ho on suspicion of "cruelty to animals" and "possession of offensive weapons," and seized the poison bait and weapon for further testing. The case has been handed over to the Sham Shui Po District Criminal Investigation Team 3 for follow-up investigation.
Since mid-August this year, animal welfare organizations have discovered black, sludge-like substances and suspected rat poison in the food bags placed by cat volunteers, suspecting an attempt to poison stray cats. Animal welfare organizations and volunteers had been deploying their own CCTV cameras for months, capturing footage of a jogger frequently adding food to cat food late at night. Early this morning (Oct. 24), they apprehended him and called the police.
An animal welfare organization representative told the media that seven of them were lying in wait when they caught the man, dressed in running gear, in the act. The man had said, "I don't want you (the cats and volunteers) to make this place dirty," and "I thought the cats wouldn't eat."
