Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing while watching a training session involving the club's reserve team, the Bundesliga leaders confirmed.
The 40-year-old Belgian is undergoing medical examinations at a Munich hospital and will remain under medical supervision.
Kompany had been observing the Bayern reserves' afternoon training session when the incident occurred. An emergency helicopter subsequently landed at the club's training ground.
Bayern confirmed that Kompany would temporarily step away from his coaching duties, with assistant coach Aaron Danks and the remaining staff taking charge of training and matches until further notice.
"The health of Vincent Kompany is our highest priority. We will do everything at FC Bayern to help him recover quickly," board member for sport Max Eberl said in a club statement.
"Vinnie will receive all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. We have complete confidence in his coaching staff, who will take over his responsibilities," Eberl added.
Kompany had been struggling with a viral infection since last week, which had already disrupted his preparations and restricted his involvement on the touchline during Bayern's 6-1 Bundesliga victory over RB Leipzig.
He subsequently missed several training sessions, with Danks replacing him at the pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern's Champions League encounter with Arsenal.
Although Kompany returned to the touchline for the 2-2 draw against the London club, he acknowledged afterwards that he had pushed himself despite feeling unwell.
"As a coach, you always want to do everything. I caught quite a nasty virus last week and obviously didn't listen to my body," Kompany said.
The precise cause of Friday's collapse remains unclear. Bayern will therefore face Freiburg on Sunday without Kompany on the touchline.
Bayern lead the Bundesliga standings on goal difference ahead of Borussia Dortmund, with both clubs collecting 14 points from six matches. Freiburg sit third, just one point behind Bayern, setting up a meeting between two of the league's top three sides.
