Chinese table tennis star Fan Zhendong spoke out against covert filming on Wednesday (Oct. 21), saying that describing such behaviour as an expression of affection did not change its fundamentally disrespectful nature or its infringement of personal privacy.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Fan questioned whether anyone would willingly be filmed secretly. He said that regardless of the identity, mindset or intentions of the person filming, such behaviour remained disrespectful and constituted an invasion of privacy, even when it was done in the name of love or the footage was published and circulated later.
Fan added that having a strong sense of personal boundaries did not mean being cold or indifferent.
"Rational fans and friendly passers-by do not greet me with their phones raised and cameras recording. Far from resisting their approaches, I have always been happy to respond to them," the post reads.
However, when people filmed him while calling out to him in an attempt to interact with or even approach him, Fan said he found it difficult to distinguish genuine fans who admired and supported him from social media operators seeking to profit from online traffic.
"Those who respect others will always be respected in return," Fan said.
