The redeveloped Huanggang Port saw heavy crowds on Sunday (Oct. 18) as residents headed north to pay respects to their ancestors on the Chongyang Festival (Chung Yeung Festival), with Hong Kong residents facing an estimated 30-minute wait to cross the boundary.
The newly rebuilt Huanggang Port officially opened on Oct. 12 and saw its first weekend of operation this week. With Sunday marking the Chongyang Festival, a traditional occasion for ancestor worship, large numbers of HK residents travelled north, leading to heavy crowds at the port. Online posts reported that crowd-control measures had been implemented, with long queues visible at the immigration gates.
Secretary for Security Chris Tang said on Saturday (Oct. 17) that passenger traffic was expected to peak during the three-day Chongyang Festival holiday.
The latest figures from the Immigration Department showed that HK's land, sea and air control points recorded a total of 1.353 million passenger arrivals and departures on Saturday. The redeveloped Huanggang Port handled more than 130,000 passenger crossings.
