American auction house Hunt Auctions said on Oct. 12 that a game-worn jersey belonging to "Basketball God" Michael Jordan has sold for US$14 million, setting the highest auction record for basketball-related memorabilia.
According to Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA), the red Chicago Bulls jersey bears the number 23 worn by Jordan and was worn during Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz. It was ultimately purchased by an American real estate developer.
The 1997-98 season was Jordan's final season with the Bulls, and jerseys worn during his last Finals run remain highly sought after. In 2022, his Game 1 jersey sold for US$10.1 million. Last month, his Game 3 jersey sold for US$12.26 million, setting the auction record at the time.
Under Jordan's leadership, the Chicago Bulls won multiple NBA championships. His "Last Dance" season remains a favourite topic among fans to this day.
It is worth noting that the highest-priced sports jersey ever auctioned was the New York Yankees jersey worn by baseball legend Babe Ruth during the 1932 World Series, which sold for US$24.12 million in 2024.
