According to Portuguese Football Federation regulations, Cristiano Ronaldo is currently under provisional suspension, but the disciplinary committee will consider mitigating factors such as his public apology when determining the punishment. If handed the lightest possible sanction, the Portugal captain could return to the national team as early as November.
The Portuguese Football Federation's disciplinary committee recently stated that Ronaldo's suspension came into effect automatically after he left the national team's training camp in Denmark without authorisation last week. The formal suspension period will be decided at a committee meeting and could range from one to six months. The committee will focus on mitigating circumstances, including Ronaldo's public apology made on Oct. 6.
According to reports, if Ronaldo receives only a one-month suspension, he would be available for Portugal's UEFA Nations League matches against Wales and Denmark on Nov. 14 and 17. If suspended for three months, he would miss only those two matches and could still return for the semi-finals in March 2027. It is widely believed that, given Ronaldo's glittering 20-plus-year international career, a heavy six-month ban is highly unlikely.
Ronaldo left the camp without permission last week following a conflict with head coach Jorge Jesus, an incident that shook Portuguese football. Ronaldo later broke his silence, explaining his reasons for leaving and issuing a public apology.
Portugal have already qualified for the 2026/27 Nations League finals but still need to secure top spot or a second-place finish in their group.
