Portugal football star Cristiano Ronaldo hinted on Aug. 16 that the upcoming season could be the final year of his professional career in an interview with Vogue magazine.

"This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy," the 41-year-old said.

Ronaldo said he has already made plans for life after football, noting that retirement could leave a significant void that would need to be filled in different ways.

"I have my future all mapped out. I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard. Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.

"Have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I've earned-what we've earned.

"Because after all it's been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice."

Ronaldo made his professional debut with Portuguese club Sporting CP in 2002. He has since played for Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and his current club Al Nassr, winning numerous major trophies and claiming the Ballon d'Or five times.

He has scored 976 goals for club and country combined and is currently pursuing the milestone of 1,000 career goals.

Earlier this year, Ronaldo married his longtime partner Georgina Rodriguez. He will continue to represent Al Nassr in the new season, aiming to achieve further success before retiring.
