Hong Kong Observatory said on Wednesday (Oct. 7) that the chance of a tropical cyclone directly affecting HK during the rest of this month is low, and the city's typhoon season is expected to end in October or earlier, in line with expectations. The Observatory also said tropical cyclones Choi-wan, Koguma and Nolo may turn northward, and reminded members of the public planning to visit Japan to closely monitor weather information.

The Observatory said that, as of Oct. 6, a total of 34 tropical cyclones had affected the western North Pacific and the South China Sea this year, significantly higher than the long-term average of about 21 for the period from January to September. Of these, 12 tropical cyclones formed in August, breaking the record for the highest number of tropical cyclones formed in a single month since 1961.

So far this year, only three tropical cyclones have entered within 500 kilometres of HK, fewer than the long-term average of about five.

At present, tropical cyclones Choi-wan, Koguma and Nolo are affecting the western North Pacific. The Observatory said atmospheric circulation patterns are expected to favour tropical cyclones over the western North Pacific turning northward, with the systems potentially affecting Japan and neighbouring waters.

The Observatory reminded members of the public planning to visit Japan to closely monitor the latest weather information.
