Commuters in Hong Kong are advised to take precautions this morning as a northeast monsoon brings increased cloudiness, showers, and thunderstorms across southern China over the next day or two, with locally heavy rainfall expected across the territory.
According to the Hong Kong Observatory, winds across the city will gradually turn easterly to northeasterly today (Oct. 2), with heavy rain in localized areas. Frequent showers will persist in some districts early Saturday (Oct. 3), giving way to a continuous stretch of cloudy and rainy weather over the following few days.
The drop in temperature is exceptionally sharp following National Day's scorching heat, which saw temperatures in Sheung Shui and Ta Kwu Ling approach 37°C. Early morning temperatures in these two New Territories districts are forecast to plunge by around 11 degrees to approximately 24°C to 25°C.
In urban areas, temperatures today will range between 27°C and 31°C, with relative humidity soaring between 70% and 95%.
Looking ahead to next week, a replenishment of the northeast monsoon is expected to arrive along the coast of Guangdong early in the week. This system will bring stronger winds and a decline in showers, gradually clearing the skies for drier, brighter weather.
By next Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct. 6 and 7), urban temperatures are set to drop further to 24°C, marking the lowest point in the nine-day weather forecast. Due to the larger day-night temperature differences in inland regions, members of the public are advised to stay warm during the mornings and evenings.
