Today, October 1, marks the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Red flags and anniversary signs filled Hong Kong's streets, bringing a festive atmosphere to the city.
We spoke to locals and visitors about how they plan to spend the holiday. Some chose to stay in Hong Kong and enjoy the city's quieter moments; others planned a trip to Ko Samui to get away and recharge; and some stayed because flight prices had soared, hoping to visit Sai Kung or simply relax with family and their daughter. A French interviewee shared how their home country celebrates its national day, while others noted the visible decorations and the influx of mainland tourists.
Many sent their best wishes to Hong Kong — hoping the city stays authentic, keeps its culture and history, and remains a happy home for its people. Here's what they had to say.
