Hong Kong will unveil its first Five-Year Plan tomorrow (Sept. 16), clearly outlining the city's development vision and strategic direction for the next five years. We hit the streets to ask residents about the issues they care about most: housing, job opportunities, and medical care.
On housing, the message from residents was fairly consistent: finding a place with the right location and a reasonable price is no easy task. They mentioned 12-month lease commitments, rising costs, and the compromises they have to accept — noise, humidity, and cramped space.
On the job market, competition is fierce and conditions are increasingly difficult, especially for young people and non-Chinese speakers. Despite the challenges, many still believe that opportunities exist for those willing to persevere.
By contrast, the healthcare system received widespread praise. Most residents said their experiences in both public and private hospitals have been positive, though they did acknowledge the pressure and overcrowding facing the public system.
