Five Hong Kong universities have retained their places among the world's top 100 in the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) world university rankings, with the Education Bureau (EB) saying the city's higher education sector is entering a "golden period" of development.
A spokesperson for the EB said today (Sept. 30) that HK universities continued to receive high recognition in the 2027 rankings released by international higher education institution THE. The results fully demonstrate the strength of HK's higher education system and its world-class standards in teaching, research and internationalization, while also reflecting the solid foundation created by the Government's sustained investment and policy support over the years.
The spokesperson said HK universities have consistently ranked highly in international rankings over the years. This not only reflects the higher education sector's efforts to pursue excellence and strive for progress, but also demonstrates the outstanding results achieved through the Government's proactive efforts to promote innovation and transformation, as well as measures to expand capacity and enhance quality in the post-secondary education sector.
The Government will continue to promote the full integration of HK's higher education sector into the country's overall development, contributing to the country's efforts to build a strong education system, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson noted that HK universities have maintained strong and stable performances despite intense global competition. Looking ahead, with the HK's first five-year plan being fully implemented, promoting the integrated development of "education, technology and talent" and the development of the Northern Metropolis university town, HK's higher education sector is entering a "golden period" with significant development opportunities.
The Government will continue to promote comprehensive connectivity in areas including talent development, frontier research and industry-academia-research collaboration, optimize resource allocation, support universities in consolidating their existing strengths while pursuing innovation, and nurture more outstanding talent with international perspectives and exceptional capabilities, contributing more to the long-term prosperity and stability of HK and the country, the spokesperson said.
According to the latest THE world university rankings, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) ranked 33rd globally, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) ranked 42nd, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) ranked 58th. City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) climbed to 70th and 79th, respectively.
