Recently, a number of anti-China politicians and forces have spoken out together, urging Hong Kong to release Jimmy Lai. In their narrative, Lai is a "man of justice" and a representative of "openness and democracy," and they claim that keeping him detained is the wrong approach.
This reminds the author of a character in the TV drama Yongzheng Dynasty. The drama depicts a cynical attitude toward winning support with an "open and wise" posture. When Emperor Kangxi faced Prince Yin Si, who tried to win over court officials with an image of benevolence, Kangxi delivered sharp sarcasm.
Earlier, the minister Tong Guowei and many officials recommended Yin Si for Crown Prince, revealing a trend of forming cliques for personal interests. Kangxi was enraged and rebuked Tong Guowei severely in court. When it became clear that things were going badly, Yin Si spoke up for Tong Guowei and even said he was willing to withdraw from the Crown Prince selection.
Kangxi then mocked Yin Si: "No wonder people call you the 'Eighth Sage Prince'--you are indeed 'sage at just the right time.'" To build his profile, Yin Si even promoted false theories by bringing in fortune-tellers from the underworld. After Kangxi learned this, his impression of Yin Si worsened further.
Tong Guowei and the officials' joint push exposed their clique-forming ambitions, which is what enraged Kangxi. And Yin Si defending Tong Guowei in court confirmed to Kangxi that the two had already coordinated in private, with the nomination merely a carefully arranged performance.
Returning to Jimmy Lai: as the founder of Apple Daily, he claims to be a "journalist," but what he does is "infiltration," colluding with overseas forces to undermine China and destabilize Hong Kong. Today, anti-China forces are focused single-mindedly on this old "Jimmy Lai affair." Their loud backing itself shows that there is an echoing relationship between Jimmy Lai and overseas forces.
To incite public opinion, back then Apple Daily highlighted "yellow journalism," encouraged violence, and published unverified information--turning journalism, which should be fact-based, into something as exaggerated as The Arabian Nights. Even fortune-tellers could not do more than this. Such an intent to disrupt Hong Kong is obvious; yet now they even want to "seek vindication." How arrogant and ignorant!
