The Hong Kong Observatory said today (Sept. 23) that a tropical cyclone near Yap Island will move across the western North Pacific east of the Philippines over the next two days and gradually intensify, with the system expected to strengthen into a super typhoon by Sunday (Sept. 27).
The tropical cyclone is forecast to move towards the Luzon Strait and waters east of Taiwan later this week. However, its subsequent track remains uncertain. It could turn northwards towards Japan, or cross Taiwan and move towards the eastern coast of Guangdong.
The Observatory said the tropical cyclone's subsiding air over its periphery would bring generally sunny weather to Guangdong from early to mid-next week, with extremely high temperatures expected in inland areas.
The northeast monsoon is expected to gradually affect southern China around National Day, bringing a slight drop in temperatures and easing the hot weather across the region.
