Powerful Typhoon Dujuan has battered eastern Japan, including the Kanto region, prompting authorities to urge more than 1.9 million residents to evacuate across five prefectures, including Tokyo.

On Sept. 21, about 500 flights at Tokyo's Narita and Haneda airports were canceled due to the storm and heavy rain.

A landslide in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, left a woman in her 60s believed to have been buried alive. In Chiba Prefecture, a man in his 50s was confirmed dead amid landslides and flooding. Four people remain missing across the two prefectures.

Police and fire departments plan to continue search and rescue operations on Sept. 22.

Record rainfall hits Izu Islands and Kanto

Typhoon Dujuan brought record-breaking rainfall to the Kanto region and the Izu Islands, triggering landslides and river flooding.

While widespread areas are expected to see clearer weather on Sept. 22, authorities are urging continued vigilance against landslides as days of heavy rain have left the ground saturated and unstable.

The Izu Islands and Kanto region were covered by well-developed rain clouds for extended periods before and during the typhoon's approach, resulting in record rainfall.

On Izu Oshima, rainfall over 48 hours reached 832 millimeters, more than 2.4 times the average rainfall for the entire month of September and the highest level recorded since records began.
