A video circulating online recently shows a couple, believed to be from Hong Kong, getting into an argument with MRT station staff on the platform at Daan Station in Taipei. The man was caught drinking a beverage inside the station. After staff reminded him that continuing to drink would result in a NT$1,500 fine, the woman accompanying him became visibly upset and argued with staff, retorting that "he only drank once." The man also chimed in, questioning whether staff were simply looking for an excuse to issue a fine. The woman then defiantly flashed her middle finger at the staff member.
Taipei MRT said on Sept. 16 that security had filed a report with the police and would provide full judicial assistance. It also noted that drinking in prohibited areas can result in a fine of between NT$1,500 and NT$7,500 (approximately HK$370 to HK$1,850).
Netizens slammed the pair, calling them an embarrassment: "Doing something wrong is already bad — why flash the middle finger? Do they solve every problem with the middle finger?" "Just fine them directly — they don't listen to reason."
