The US-Iran war has lasted more than half a year. In its latest report, the U.S. Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said that as of Aug. 1 this year, the war with Iran had burned through US$38 billion and significantly depleted US military ammunition stockpiles. It estimated that if the conflict continues, costs could rise by another US$2 billion to US$3 billion per month.

Citing foreign media reports, the CBO noted in the report that as of Aug. 1, the armed conflict with Iran had cost the U.S. military about US$38 billion and would push the inflation rate up by 0.5% in the first quarter of next year. The report added that if the conflict continues, monthly spending could range from US$2 billion to US$3 billion, or even higher.

The report said these figures reflect factors such as replenishing depleted munitions, replacing equipment lost in combat, and rising military fuel costs. However, they do not include potential follow-on repair or additional maintenance costs for ships, military aircraft and other equipment committed to the conflict, nor the cost of repairing damaged military bases. The report noted that most of the war cost comes from the rapid depletion of ammunition stockpiles, and estimated that it will take five years to replenish U.S. ammunition reserves.

Defense Secretary Hegseth estimated in July that the Iran war had cost US$37.5 billion. The CBO's latest figure is close to that.
