King Charles III has authorized the Lord Chamberlain to write to senior government and military officials, making clear that Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, will not resume royal duties following their return to the UK, and that their status is equivalent to that of private citizens with commercial and charitable interests. The couple's spokesperson later said the team was given only very short notice before the letter was released to the media, and expressed surprise at the handling of the matter.
The letter, issued on Monday (Sep. 7) by Lord Chamberlain Richard Benyon on the King's instructions, was intended to prevent "questions or confusion" among government departments, the military, and other official bodies regarding the couple's identity.
The letter reiterated that since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, they are no longer working members of the royal family, and that the existing arrangements remain unchanged. They enjoy financial independence and private living space, but do not represent the Crown in any official capacity, and their commercial and charitable work is of a personal nature. Harry and Meghan retain their titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex, while the "His/Her Royal Highness" style remains in abeyance — a status not newly revoked by this letter.
According to British media, the couple's team received the letter at around 1:59 pm on Monday. About 20 minutes later, they raised questions with Buckingham Palace to seek clarification before the contents were made public. At that time, Harry was in a meeting, and his team was not able to reach him until about 3:09 pm — by which point the letter had already been released to the press.
The Associated Press, citing a source close to the couple, said that only about one hour and 12 minutes elapsed between the team receiving the letter and the media obtaining its contents. The couple did not dispute the substance of the letter, but were surprised by the exceptionally short window given to respond. Buckingham Palace, for its part, stressed that the move was merely a restatement of their existing status and did not change the agreement reached with the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2020.
The letter also separated the issue of security from royal status, stating that enquiries regarding actual protective arrangements should be directed to the relevant police and competent authorities. The Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC), which assesses security arrangements for royal family members and other public figures, is expected to meet this week to determine what level of police protection the couple should receive following their return to the UK, and whether the costs should be borne by the public purse.
Harry has long campaigned for the restoration of taxpayer-funded police protection, and security concerns were one of the main reasons he had previously cited for being unable to bring his family back to the UK for extended periods. Harry may still proceed with planned charitable activities, including work involving sick children and veterans, but all such engagements will be undertaken in a personal capacity or on behalf of his charitable organizations, and will not represent the King or the British monarchy.
