The maiden summer voyage of the China-Europe Arctic container express departed from Ningbo Zhoushan Port on the evening of August 15, following loading operations that began earlier that morning. The container vessel Dubai Tower is carrying about 1,500 TEUs of "new trio" exports—mainly energy storage cabinets, power batteries, photovoltaic modules, and new-energy components—and is expected to reach Europe in 18 to 20 days, according to Fang Yi, CEO of route operator Sea Legend Line. Approximately 60% of the cargo comes from manufacturing hubs in Zhejiang's Ningbo and Yiwu, aligning with European peak-season demand.
Taking the Arctic Northeast Passage, the route bypasses the Red Sea and the Strait of Malacca, cutting transit time significantly compared to the traditional Suez Canal route, which takes 30–35 days. Fang also noted that the Arctic's ambient temperatures (between -3°C and 10°C) are especially beneficial for heat-sensitive goods, giving China's "new trio" products a competitive edge.
All slots for the first two voyages have been sold out, with freight rates around US$8,000 per container. Major clients include ZTE and EVE Energy. EVE's logistics director estimated the route could reduce inventory levels by about 40% and lower capital costs, while enhancing supply chain resilience amid geopolitical uncertainties.
Following a successful trial in September 2025, the service has now entered regular weekly operations for this season, with eight voyages scheduled from August 15 through October. The route shortens the China-Europe maritime distance from 22,000 km to 15,000 km and cuts carbon emissions per unit by 50%, with some ice-class vessels using LNG clean energy to comply with EU carbon tariffs. The operator plans to achieve four months of stable annual navigation within 3–5 years, with a long-term goal of year-round operations. Industry observers view the route as a strategic alternative that avoids Suez congestion, Red Sea risks, and piracy, while the Chinese government has signaled support through dedicated navigation service portals.
