Hong Kong Customs on Sept. 5 and yesterday (Sept. 6) detected two suspected cases of illegally importing live plant pests at the Lo Wu Control Point, seizing 200 suspected illegally imported live crickets and 13 kilograms of suspected illegally imported live dubia roaches with a total estimated market value of about HK$5,900.

Customs officers on Sept. 5 intercepted a 71-year-old incoming local man at the Arrival Hall of the control point. Upon examination, the batch of suspected illegally imported live crickets, with an estimated market value of about HK$2,000, was seized from his personal baggage, and he was subsequently arrested.

In addition, Customs officers yesterday intercepted a 66-year-old incoming local woman at the Arrival Hall of the Control Point. Upon examination, the batch of suspected illegally imported live dubia roaches, with an estimated market value of about HK$3,900, was seized from her personal baggage, and she was subsequently arrested.

Both cases were handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.

Customs reminds members of the public that importing any plant pest or any plant infected by or infested with a plant pest into Hong Kong without prior authorisation issued by the Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation is an offence.

Under the Plant (Importation and Pest Control) Ordinance, any person found guilty of illegally importing a plant pest without authorisation is liable to a maximum fine of HK$10,000 and imprisonment for six months.
