Born in Beijing on Feb. 15, 1969, He began learning music at the age of six under the tutelage of his father, He Yusheng. In 1994, he released his debut solo album Garbage Dump 垃圾場 (also known as The Qilin Diary 麒麟日記). That same year, he performed alongside Dou Wei and Zhang Qu at the Hong Kong Coliseum, a concert that sent shockwaves through the Chinese-language music world.

He Yong rarely appeared in public in later years due to long-term health struggles. Although his body of work was relatively small, songs such as Zhonggu Lou 鐘鼓樓 and Guniang Piaoliang 姑娘漂亮 remain beloved by fans to this day.
