South Korean police have released the identity and photographs of a 31-year-old man surnamed Jeong (or Zheng Changsheng) who is suspected of killing a Chinese female student, making public his name, age and front-facing and profile photographs.
The Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency published the suspect's information on its official website on the morning of Sept. 1 local time. According to the agency's website, the information will remain publicly available for one month, from Sept. 1 to Oct. 1.
Starting Sept. 1, the suspect's name, age and front-facing photograph, among other personal information, were made public. The decision to disclose the information was made by a deliberation committee after comprehensively considering factors related to the public interest, including the severity of the alleged murder, the seriousness of its consequences, the sufficiency of relevant evidence and crime prevention.
Jeong is suspected of killing a 25-year-old Chinese female student who had previously been his student at his residence in Gyeongsan, in the early hours of Aug. 20. He is also suspected of mutilating and abandoning her body.
The female student lost contact with her family after traveling to Daegu on the evening of Aug. 20. She was found dead inside Jeong's residence on the afternoon of Aug. 25.
In an apparent attempt to confuse investigators, Jeong allegedly went to Dongdaegu Station wearing women's clothing after the killing and switched off the student's mobile phone near the station.
Jeong was arrested by police at around 7:29 p.m. on Aug. 25.
