Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu expressed deep condolences on today (Aug 29) for those killed in a mudslide at Gyirong Port in Gyirong County, Rikaze, Xizang. The tragedy was triggered by a landslide on the Nepalese side of the border and has resulted in serious casualties, with a large number of people still unaccounted for.
In a post on social media, Lee also conveyed his sympathies to residents affected by the disaster and to the families of the victims.
Lee said the Hong Kong SAR government has earmarked HK$50 million from the Disaster Relief Fund to support emergency relief operations. He added that the Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee will review funding applications on an expedited basis.
Lee also paid tribute to frontline rescue workers, who have been carrying out search-and-rescue operations while facing risks including secondary disasters. He wished the relief efforts proceed smoothly and safely, and hoped those affected will receive timely assistance and recover from the ordeal as soon as possible.
