Data released on Aug. 25 shows that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made nearly 50,000 arrests in July, the highest monthly total since the start of Donald Trump's second term.

ICE arrests totaled 49,571 in July, up about 15% from 43,021 in June and about 70% from 29,241 in February, according to the data.

The government statistics were provided by ICE to the University of California, Berkeley.

On July 13, ICE officers shot and killed a 26-year-old Colombian man during an operation targeting "irregular immigrants" in Maine. It was the second time in a week that ICE officers had killed a foreign national during such operations, sparking protests. Since the federal government intensified immigration enforcement last year, at least nine people have died in such operations, according to statistics.

Trump stepped up efforts to crack down on illegal immigration after returning to the White House in January last year. ICE officers have since conducted enforcement operations against illegal immigrants in major cities across the United States.
