The inaugural Global Unicorn Summit, hosted by Hong Kong Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group, officially opened today (Aug. 24) and will run through Aug. 25 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Under the theme "BORN TO LEAD, BUILT TO CREATE," the summit is positioned to connect Hong Kong with the world, bringing together global innovation forces. It serves as a high-level, international platform for collaboration across enterprises, capital, technology, talent, policy, and services within the innovation and technology ecosystem. The summit aims to facilitate the settlement of global unicorn companies in Hong Kong, support their public listings in the city, and enable them to expand globally through Hong Kong, thereby contributing to the development of Hong Kong as an international I&T hub.
The opening ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Chief Executive John Lee; Zhang Yong, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR; Li Dahong, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of Hong Kong Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group; Eric Tse, CEO of Sino Biopharmaceutical Limited; Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry; Lau Hai-suen, Director of InvestHK; and Clara Chan, CEO of Hong Kong Investment Corporation Limited.
In his opening remarks, Chief Executive John Lee highlighted that the summit brings together global talent in research, industry, and investment. He noted that as technology rapidly evolves, Hong Kong must nurture and expand emerging and future industries, improve its industrial innovation and development ecosystem, and seize opportunities for developing new quality productive forces. Lee emphasized that Hong Kong can serve as a launchpad for mainland unicorn companies to expand overseas markets, while also helping top global tech firms explore the mainland market. He welcomed businesses and investment institutions to establish roots in Hong Kong and co-create a new chapter in global technological development.
Li Dahong said in his opening address that the inaugural Global Unicorn Summit is a gathering where the world's innovation forces unite, connecting technology with capital, and R&D with industry. Through a five-in-one format, the summit integrates enterprises, capital, technology, talent, policy, and professional expertise to showcase innovation achievements. Li expressed his hope that the summit would serve as a starting point for collaboration, sparking new ideas and enabling more enterprises to leverage their achievements to help Hong Kong reach the world.
Eric Tse noted that the summit's theme, "BORN TO LEAD, BUILT TO CREATE," captures the broader trends shaping Hong Kong and the world. He pointed out that the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) presents countless opportunities for innovation, and he looked forward to hearing valuable insights at the summit. He expressed confidence that more enterprises would contribute to Hong Kong, the nation, and the world through innovation and technology.
