A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Andean mountains in southern Peru, with the epicenter located about 35 kilometers north of the Coracora city in Ayacucho province, at a depth of 108 kilometers. Significant shaking was felt in the capital Lima and several southern regions, with at least two injuries reported so far.
The earthquake occurred at around 1:00 pm local time on Thursday (Aug. 20), which corresponds to approximately 2:00 am Hong Kong time on Friday (Aug. 21). The US Geological Survey initially recorded the quake as a 7.2-magnitude event before revising it down to 6.7. Following the tremor, residents captured footage of landslides and dust clouds in the mountainous areas. The earthquake also damaged over 20 homes, six medical centers, and one school. Peruvian authorities reported that tremors were felt across multiple areas surrounding the epicenter. No major damages or fatalities have been reported so far, and officials have urged the public to remain calm and move to safe locations.
