Police and paramedics were called to a house in Ping Yeung at 4:12 p.m. on Aug. 20 after receiving a report that a local woman had been found unconscious on a grassy area inside the property. She was later pronounced dead at the scene, with suspected dog bite injuries found on her body.

The case has initially been classified as a dead body found case. Police briefed the media on the case on Thursday evening.

The scene was a licensed pet hotel and dog training centre that began operating in January 2026. Police said there were no signs of a break-in or robbery at the scene.

A review of CCTV footage showed that the incident occurred at around 2 p.m. The woman was seen feeding a mixed-breed dog on an outdoor grassy area before attempting to return it to a kennel.

The dog refused to enter the kennel and attacked the woman.

The CCTV footage last showed the woman and the dog moving away from the kennel towards the grassy area outside the dog house.

Police said the deceased was a 33-year-old local woman and the licensee of the pet hotel. She was the only person working at the facility at the time of the incident.

A preliminary examination found tearing wounds and animal bite marks of varying degrees on the woman's head, lower jaw, neck and both arms.

The dog involved was a one-year-old yellow male mixed-breed dog. It had been brought to the facility by a volunteer on Aug. 11 to be fostered while awaiting adoption.

According to the CCTV footage, the dog attacked the woman for about one minute. Police said they believe the woman was conscious when she was attacked. The dog was approximately one meter in length.

According to the police, there were seven dogs at the facility in total. Apart from the dog involved in the attack, all the other dogs were kept in kennels.

The exact cause of death remains under investigation. Police said there was currently no information indicating that the woman had any underlying illness.

Forensic pathologists, representatives from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and the Labour Department are assisting with the investigation at the scene.

The dog involved in the incident will be taken away by the AFCD for further examination and observation.
