A dog attack in Yuen Long on Aug. 17 has drawn widespread attention after a large dog, measuring about 1.5 metres in length and 1 metre in height and weighing around 60 kilograms, mauled two dogs to death—a 17-year-old poodle and a four-year-old bichon frise.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said today (Aug. 19) that the dog involved is a mixed-breed dog that may have Tibetan Mastiff ancestry.

It is currently being monitored at an animal management centre to assess whether it poses a risk of rabies.

The department said it would ascertain the owner's intentions. If the owner intends to surrender the dog to the government, the AFCD may, if necessary, put the dog down humanely.

The AFCD added that if the owner takes the dog back, the court may order it to be classified as a known dangerous dog because it had seriously injured and killed other dogs in a public place.

The dog would then be required to wear a muzzle and be subject to regulatory controls.
