A dog attack in Yuen Long on Monday (Aug. 17) left a 17-year-old poodle and a four-year-old Bichon dead after a roughly 60kg unleashed dog repeatedly attacked them, sparking widespread concern. The owner of the Bichon, who was killed in the attack, spoke out on social media on Tuesday (Aug. 18), saying she had tried various ways to save her pet but the larger dog refused to let go, leaving her to watch helplessly as her dog died.

The Bichon's owner said on social media that she had taken her dog for its usual walk at the YOHO Lollipop Park in Yuen Long on Monday when a large dog, about half her height, suddenly rushed out and bit her dog by the neck.

"I tried everything: kicking the big dog, spraying water at its nose and using treats to lure it away, but it just kept biting my dog and would not let go," she said.

"I screamed for help, and I am grateful to the passers-by who came to help. But faced with a large dog weighing dozens of kilograms that refused to let go, there was nothing anyone could do. I could only watch helplessly as my dog lost her life."

Even after the Bichon was visibly dead, the large dog continued to guard her body until police arrived and restrained it, allowing the owner to retrieve her pet's body.

The owner described her Bichon as "especially well-behaved and gentle" and said she was the family's "little angel". The sudden tragedy left the entire family devastated and unable to sleep through the night.

"I really want to hold her again and kiss her. I cannot believe she suddenly left us like this," she said.

The owner also said the large dog's owner had not appeared at any point during the incident.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said it had taken the large dog to an animal management centre under its jurisdiction. An inspection found that the dog had been implanted with a microchip and had a valid dog licence.

The department said it would contact the keeper based on the information on the dog licence and investigate the incident. Prosecution would follow if sufficient evidence was found.
