The Indiana Emergency Operations Center and state officials released information on Aug. 15 stating that days of severe storms and flooding have claimed at least six lives in the state. Over the past week, continuous heavy rainfall has caused multiple rivers in the state to rise, forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said the city is experiencing its worst flooding in more than 30 years. More than a dozen counties in Indiana have declared local disaster states. Emergency responders are currently carrying out relief and rescue operations, with the National Guard also involved in the efforts.
Earlier this week, powerful storms struck the US Midwest, spawning tornadoes, heavy rain, and flash floods. In addition to Indiana, affected states include Illinois, Kentucky, and Ohio, with nearly 1 million customers losing power at one point.
