Typhoon Chan-hom is moving westward over waters east of Japan and is expected to make landfall in the Kanto region this afternoon (Aug. 11) before traversing westward across the Japanese archipelago.
In response to the storm's approach, at least 62 flights have been canceled at Tokyo's Haneda and Narita airports, while summer fireworks displays and outdoor gatherings in several regions have been forced to a halt.
According to public broadcaster NHK, as of 11:00 a.m. local time today, All Nippon Airways (ANA) has canceled 58 flights, and Japan Airlines (JAL) has canceled four.
Major carriers anticipate additional cancellations or delays as Chan-hom draws closer to the Kanto area, urging passengers to check their latest flight status in advance.
The severe weather has also upended seasonal celebrations.
Organizers have announced the cancellation of tonight's Koto Fireworks Festival in Tokyo as well as the Mikuni Fireworks Festival in Fukui Prefecture—the largest event of its kind in the Hokuriku region.
