Strong Typhoon Dolphin battered Japan's Okinawa Prefecture, disrupting air and land transport and leaving 2,030 households without electricity as of 10 a.m. local time on Aug. 7.
The storm's circulation is covering Okinawa's main island, the Daito Islands and the Amami region of Kagoshima Prefecture.
Meteorological authorities forecast sustained winds exceeding 140 km/h in Okinawa and the Amami region, with gusts of more than 216 km/h. The powerful winds could damage or destroy some buildings. Residents have been warned to remain alert for strong winds, torrential rain, high waves, landslides and other storm-related hazards.
The severe weather has brought transport to a standstill across Okinawa's main island. All bus services and the Okinawa Urban Monorail have been suspended, while expressways have been closed. Naha Airport, Ishigaki Airport and Miyako Airport have also suspended operations for the entire day. Several tourist attractions and shopping malls have temporarily closed.
Meanwhile, China's National Meteorological Centre has maintained a yellow typhoon alert. It forecasts that Dolphin will pass through the Ryukyu Islands on Friday before moving into the East China Sea. The storm is expected to slow down as it approaches China's eastern coast and could make landfall between Zhejiang Province and northern Fujian Province as a typhoon or a strong typhoon from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning.
