A violent incident occurred at Upper Wong Tai Sin Estate on Saturday (Aug. 8), after a 26-year-old man was attacked with a cleaver by his 46-year-old neighbour inside a lift. The victim was left covered in blood, while the suspected attacker returned to his flat and fell to his death.

Police said the suspect had repeatedly clashed with the injured man, who lived in the flat above him, over noise. Police had received only one report related to the disputes. After mediation, the two men left peacefully.

The suspect had also applied to the Housing Department to transfer to another flat. His application had been approved and he was waiting to be allocated a new home, but the incident ultimately ended in tragedy.

The suspect is understood to have worked as a truck driver for an engineering company and had lived with his mother for many years. His mother moved into an elderly care home last year, leaving him living alone.

The injured man worked as a technician at a water treatment plant. He moved into the flat with his grandmother, mother and younger sister in September last year.

Police said the suspect had made repeated complaints about noise from the injured man's flat. Officers received only one related report, which was made in November last year.

At the time, the suspect felt that the noise from the injured man's flat was seriously disturbing him and went to the flat to complain. The injured man's younger sister was at home and called police for assistance.

Police mediated between the two sides, after which both men left peacefully.

According to neighbours, the two households had been involved in several disputes over noise. However, police had received only one related report.

Other details of the complaints remain under investigation, including whether the deceased man had previously argued with the injured man and his family, as well as how the estate management office handled the complaints at the time.
