A 46-year-old man allegedly attacked his 26-year-old neighbour with a cleaver in a lift at Upper Wong Tai Sin Estate on Saturday morning (Aug. 8), striking him at least 10 times before returning to his flat and falling to his death.
The 46-year-old suspect died at the scene.
Police held a press conference on Saturday afternoon to give details of the case.
Police said they received a report from a security guard at 7:19 a.m. that a man was attacking another man with a knife inside a lift at Chiu Sin House.
Police officers and paramedics arrived at the scene and found an injured man sitting on the floor of the lift. He had suffered knife wounds and was bleeding.
The injured man was still conscious at the time and was able to give his address. He also identified the attacker as a resident living in the flat directly below his.
The injured man was subsequently taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance for emergency treatment. He remained conscious when he was taken to hospital.
Meanwhile, the security guard and police officers found that another man involved in the case had fallen from a height onto a platform outside Chiu Sin House. He was found with no vital signs.
Police reviewed CCTV footage from inside the lift and found that the injured man entered the lift about 20 seconds before the suspect entered from another floor.
The suspect then took an object resembling a cleaver from his bag and attacked the victim. The attack was mainly directed at the victim's head and upper body.
The exact number of knife wounds is still subject to confirmation by medical reports.
Police said the suspect immediately fled the lift after the attack and was believed to have returned to his flat.
When officers went to the floor where the suspect lived, they found bloodstains in the lift lobby and outside the entrance to his flat.
There was no response when police knocked on the door. With assistance from firefighters, officers forced their way into the flat.
Police found that a window of the flat was open. A pair of bloodstained sneakers was found on the floor and was believed to belong to the suspect.
A bloodstained cleaver was also found in the kitchen.
During a further search of the flat, police found a follow-up appointment slip from the East Kowloon Psychiatric Centre on a table. The document was believed to belong to the suspect.
Police said their investigation indicated that the deceased man and the injured victim were neighbours living one floor apart.
The two had previously been involved in disputes over noise, and the suspect had lodged complaints about the victim's flat.
Police said they had records of the complaints. According to their investigation at the scene, the two households had made complaints against each other on several occasions, but none of the incidents had been reported to police at the time.
The injured man is currently undergoing surgery in hospital. His condition remains unclear.
