Chinese pop superstar Jay Chou has denied online rumours alleging that he fathered a child outside his marriage, after the claims went viral on social media. His management company has issued a statement calling the allegations "false information" and "malicious fabrications", while his wife Hannah Quinlivan responded by saying, "Rumours stop with the wise."
The controversy began after mainland paparazzo Zhuo Wei recently relayed an alleged "old relationship" story through an acquaintance. The claim suggested that a three-character Chinese music "king" had an affair with a female shareholder surnamed Liu and had a son with her.
Based on clues including a "Xi'an company" and a "female shareholder surnamed Liu", some internet users linked the allegations to Jay Chou and his former business partner Liu Ruoxue.
In response, JVR Music, Jay Chou's management company, issued a strongly worded statement on Aug. 6, saying the related claims were "completely untrue" and "purely malicious rumours". The company said it had appointed lawyers to preserve evidence and reserved the right to pursue legal action against those responsible.
Jay Chou himself appeared to indirectly address the rumours through his social media activity. On Aug. 5, he posted photos of himself playing tennis, captioning them "keep playing" and "still playing despite the rain", showing a relaxed attitude amid the controversy.
Jay Chou's wife Hannah Quinlivan posted the message "Rumours stop with the wise" on social media in response to the speculation.
According to reports, the rumour originated from Zhuo Wei recounting a story allegedly heard from a lawyer involved in a shareholder dispute involving a company in Xi'an. The story claimed that a certain "three-character music king" was introduced by a female shareholder surnamed Liu to invest in the company, and that the woman later gave birth to a child.
It further alleged that a DNA test showed the singer was the child's biological father.
The speculation quickly led online users to compare the details with Jay Chou's past investment in Xi'an Zhen'ai Fantasy Dining Entertainment Co., Ltd., a company he co-invested in with Liu Ruoxue in 2012.
Public business records show that Liu Ruoxue withdrew from the company in October 2014, while Jay Chou remained a shareholder until December 2021, a gap of seven years. Meanwhile, Jay Chou met Hannah Quinlivan in 2010 and the couple registered their marriage in 2014.
