According to reports from U.S. media including The Washington Post and The New York Times on Aug. 4, citing sources familiar with the matter, President Donald Trump has ordered contractors to rebuild the newly constructed helicopter landing pad on the White House South Lawn after expressing dissatisfaction with its appearance and questioning whether the lawn's slope needed to be changed. Photographs published by The Washington Post show that portions of the already completed work have been demolished.
On July 6, Trump had announced that a new granite helipad would be built on the South Lawn to accommodate the next‑generation presidential helicopter, Marine One. At the time, the Associated Press reported that construction crews had begun work on the South Lawn.
According to The New York Times, as of last week, the helipad appeared to be nearing completion, with contractors beginning final granite finishing touches and carving the Presidential Seal along the pad's edge. But by Tuesday (Aug. 4), photographs showed that all the lettering had disappeared, replaced by exposed concrete. The Washington Post also released photos showing that contractors had dismantled parts of the project, including the 100‑foot‑wide granite Presidential Seal that had just begun to take shape the previous week.
It remains unclear how much additional cost or time the latest changes will add to the project. The project is being funded by Lockheed Martin, which declined to comment on whether it had been asked to bear any extra expenses. Clark Construction, the contractor in charge, referred questions to the White House.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle declined on Aug. 4 to disclose why the letters had been removed or what changes would be made to the project, stating only that the White House has urgently needed a proper helipad for many years to ensure the President's safe landing while protecting the South Lawn from the exhaust of Marine One helicopters.
The reports noted that federal guidelines recommend that helipads remain flat for safety, though they need not be perfectly level with the horizon to allow for proper drainage.
Trump had previously said the new helipad project was estimated to cost between US$5 million and US$6 million, to be covered by Sikorsky Aircraft, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin. The Associated Press noted that although some of the White House renovation projects pushed by Trump were said to be funded by private sources, they have in fact used public funds as well. According to the AP, the helipad is the latest in a series of large‑scale White House renovations led by Trump, intended to reshape the estate according to his personal aesthetic. Previous projects he championed include removing sections of the Rose Garden to create a terrace space similar to his Mar‑a‑Lago estate in Florida; erecting new flagpoles on the North and South Lawns; and demolishing the East Wing building to convert it into a large banquet hall.
