Hong Kong's sporting scene has recently delivered a series of inspiring moments. The Hong Kong, China men's U20 handball team staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Vietnam 28-27 after two periods of extra time in an 80-minute marathon to claim the 2026 Men's IHF Trophy Asia title, while the men's U18 squad finished runners-up.
Having lost all three group-stage matches, the U20 team defied the odds by eliminating stronger opponents in the knockout rounds, showcasing the resilience, teamwork and composure of Hong Kong's young athletes.
Yet the significance of this victory extends far beyond the final score.
A dramatic comeback, an equalizer under pressure, two rounds of extra time, a match-saving performance by the goalkeeper and nine goals from tournament MVP Wan Pui-sum—the ingredients of a compelling sporting spectacle were all there. The real question is whether Hong Kong can transform such emotional moments into broader public engagement, ensuring that an unforgettable match belongs not only to those in the arena, but becomes a cultural event embraced by the entire city.
A similar opportunity is emerging in fencing. The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has recently appointed internationally renowned superstar and former Hong Kong fencer Jackson Wang as its first global ambassador to help promote the sport in the lead-up to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Wang said he hopes to show the beauty of fencing through entertainment and introduce the sport to audiences from all walks of life.
His vision reflects the very essence of "Sportainment"—the integration of elite sport with music, fashion, storytelling, technology and live entertainment to enhance spectator appeal, public participation and global reach, while preserving the integrity, professionalism and fairness of competition.
As Hong Kong continues to host international tournaments in handball, fencing and other sports, organizers should embrace more entertainment elements that reflect the city's unique character.
Music and creative lighting can elevate athlete introductions, timeouts and medal ceremonies. Real-time statistics, tactical visualizations and slow-motion replays can help newcomers better appreciate the nuances of competition. Singers, artists and lifestyle brands can become partners in promoting major events, while short-form videos, behind-the-scenes documentaries, athlete profiles and interactive fan experiences can extend the excitement beyond the venue and into social media and public spaces across the city.
"Sportainment" does not mean turning sport into a stage show, nor does it mean replacing athletes with celebrities. Rather, it harnesses the storytelling power of the entertainment industry to amplify athletes' professionalizm, perseverance and personal appeal.
The integrity of competition, the authority of officials and the safety of athletes must always remain paramount. Entertainment should complement the sporting experience by helping audiences better understand and connect with the competition—never overshadow it.
Hong Kong is uniquely positioned to develop a thriving Sportainment ecosystem. The city boasts world-class sporting venues, a vibrant entertainment industry, a dynamic pop culture scene, rich tourism resources and direct access to the enormous Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area market. Government, sports associations, businesses and the media should establish long-term partnerships that transform standalone tournaments into citywide experiences encompassing sporting events, live performances, exhibitions, retail, tourism and youth engagement.
The handball team's improbable triumph demonstrates that the city is not short of inspiring sporting stories. Jackson Wang's cross-sector role likewise illustrates how sport and entertainment can reinforce one another. The next step for Hong Kong is to build on the foundation of elite competition while using cultural creativity as a powerful amplifier, transforming more local sporting events into Sportainment brands that attract residents to the stands, encourage visitors to stay longer and inspire audiences around the world to watch, share and engage.
