An incident involving a passenger being pricked by a needle-like object occurred at MTR Admiralty Station. Police received a report from MTR staff at around 4:27 pm yesterday, stating that a woman had been cut by a sharp needle-like object while taking an escalator near Platform 5 of the South Island Line. She was taken by ambulance to Queen Mary Hospital for treatment.
The affected passenger posted about the incident on social media, writing: "Be careful on the escalator. I was just at Admiralty Station, on the East Rail Line, on the far right-hand escalator, and was pricked by a needle. If I hadn't held my hand against the back of the needle, I wouldn't even have seen it in a photo." She later requested that police be called, and MTR staff stopped the escalator. Photos she uploaded showed that the protruding needle-like object was very short and difficult to spot.
The woman sustained a minor cut on her left palm near her little finger and was taken by ambulance to Queen Mary Hospital. She expressed hope that the incident was not intentional, saying: "In any case, there was something so short and sharp on the handrail. It was only a matter of time before someone got pricked – it was just a matter of who was unlucky. Thank goodness it wasn't a child."
In response to media inquiries, MTR said that preliminary inspections found damage to the handrail of the escalator and that a detailed investigation would be conducted. The escalator in question has been taken out of service.
