The Transport Department has approved fully driverless autonomous vehicle testing on Airport Island today (July 23), marking a key milestone.
Transport Commissioner Winnie Tse pointed out that the project has made four major technical breakthroughs in multi-vehicle operation, passenger transport, route coverage and travelling speed.
The government first launched restricted trials on Airport Island in February, requiring onboard backup operators and remote monitoring.
After repeated assessments and inspections, remote operating systems have met all safety and stability standards, officially allowing true driverless tests.
Remote operators will still monitor all vehicles during trials, and further zone expansion will depend on operators'business plans.
So far, eight pilot licences have been issued for 65 autonomous vehicles across Hong Kong.
All tests have run smoothly at Level 4 high automation, with a total testing mileage of over 240,000 kilometres.
