According to Thai media reports on July 23, a group of unidentified assailants opened fire and threw pipe bombs at a checkpoint in Narathiwat Province in southern Thailand on July 22, killing 5 soldiers and wounding 6 civilians.
The attack occurred at around 6:45 pm local time. Video footage from the scene shows six attackers arriving in a pickup truck at the entrance of a checkpoint in Ra-ngae District, Narathiwat Province. They opened fire and threw bombs before fleeing the scene in the vehicle.
Thai security forces are now conducting a full-scale manhunt for the attackers. Authorities have also ordered maximum security measures in the area and instructed all checkpoints to remain on high alert.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on the evening of July 22 urged relevant agencies to take effective response measures in light of the attack. He also stated that peace talks in the southern border provinces would continue.
