Life as an immigrant in the UK is full of hardships. A Hong Kong father who moved to the UK with his family of three recently posted a long complaint online, saying that from daily routines and job hunting to seeing a doctor, bad things keep happening one after another.
"I might be the particularly unlucky one," he said, directly noting that "life in the UK is not really suitable for us."
The father who moved to the UK posted on Threads, saying that he feels powerless and frustrated about the series of unlucky events.
"Every immigrant family's experience is different, but I might be the particularly unlucky one. Every time I talk about our daily life in the UK, I really have mixed feelings."
There's no way to tell the disadvantage without a comparison. Home internet installation in Hong Kong is very convenient, but it is different in the UK. The father recalled his experience of setting up Wi-Fi, "A total of six technicians came, and it took nearly two months to get it installed. During that time, we were also stood up three times (with last-minute cancellations), which caused us to waste lots of time waiting around for nothing. This really made me doubt whether there is something wrong with the local administrative and operational procedures."
He also said that from job hunting to receiving an offer to actually starting work, the process dragged on for several months, causing great anxiety and unrest.
"My wife also found the job-hunting process exhausting. She had already received an offer in early October, but the actual start date was delayed all the way until January of the following year before it was confirmed. During this long wait and follow-up process of over three months, our life had no budget at all, and our moods were up and down."
Seeing a doctor abroad is difficult, but buying medicine is even harder. "There was another time when our daughter got sick. After seeing the doctor and getting a prescription, we went to three different pharmacies in a row, and every one of them said the medicine was out of stock. Watching our daughter with a fever but being unable to buy the medicine at that moment, as parents, we really felt so helpless."
The father also said that UK public institutions have chaotic administration.
"The utility bills for water, electricity, and gas are also very messy. We had already switched to a new electricity company, but the old company kept sending letters demanding payment. Although we called to report the issue and they said they would follow up, the next month we still received the same demand notice."
