More than 10,000 households have been affected by a fresh water supply disruption in Hong Kong's Shau Kei Wan district after a major water main leak, with repair works still underway.

Director of Water Supplies Wong Yan-lok inspected the affected area on Sunday (July 19). According to information available, the leak was found beneath the tram tracks in Shau Kei Wan, where excavation work is currently in progress. The damaged pipe is believed to be a large-diameter steel water main.

The Water Supplies Department said the leaking fresh water is suspected to have flowed into an underground stormwater drain. The timetable for completing repair works has yet to be determined.

The department said at least 10,000 households have been affected by the incident. During the repair operation, engineers will need to operate water valves, meaning the extent of the affected supply area may change.

According to the department, at least 12 water tankers and 100 temporary water tanks have been deployed and placed near affected residential buildings to provide residents with access to fresh water. (DDN)
