Veteran film industry figure Nansun Shi passed away at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital yesterday (July 13), aged 75. Her ex-husband Nansun Shi spoke to reporters outside the hospital. "Nansun's immune system started to deteriorate back in 2022," he said. "For all these years, she fought her illness with extraordinary resilience. Recently, her immunity declined drastically, leaving her vulnerable to successive viral infections that caused multiple organ failure. She hoped everyone would channel their sorrow and longing for her into strength and warmth to embrace her farewell."
The love story between Nansun Shi and director Tsui Hark has long been a legend in Hong Kong cinema. The pair met in 1978 and began dating in 1979. After nearly two decades together, they registered their marriage in the United States in 1996, widely hailed as the "cinematic version of the Return of the Condor Heroes" by the local film circle. Unfortunately, long periods apart strained their marriage, and they divorced in 2014. Even after their divorce, the two remained close friends and professional collaborators. Tsui Hark professed his love for her in 2008, calling her "the greatest woman ever." Tsui Hark was by her side when Nansun Shi drew her last breath.
