Hong Kong will see nearly 1,000 licensed food premises begin admitting dogs from July 9, as the first batch of approved restaurants completes the required procedures under a new arrangement that allows dogs to enter these permitted premises.

Ahead of the rollout, participating restaurants have made both operational and facility preparations, including designating pet-friendly seating areas, adding leash hooks under tables, placing visible "pet-friendly" signage, stocking cleaning supplies, and providing basic pet amenities such as water bowls.

One participating restaurant said it has allocated two indoor tables as a pet zone and designed the area to avoid high-traffic spots such as entrances, while also considering the distance from the kitchen and space for dogs. The operator said staff will adjust seating based on dogs' size, barking, and other diners' preferences and may move parties outdoors where necessary to minimize disturbance.

Some operators described frontline staff as acting as on-site coordinators, managing seating arrangements to reduce the likelihood of conflicts when multiple dogs arrive at the same time and to accommodate diners who may be uncomfortable sitting near pets.

Restaurant groups with multiple approved outlets said they are introducing standardized measures, such as table cards with paw-print icons to identify pet-zone seats, floor markings, and additional cleaning materials including pet-specific disinfectants, pee pads, and waste bags.

Groups also said staff have received training and scenario drills to handle potential incidents, including noisy dogs, disputes between dogs, and other unexpected situations, while also ensuring compliance with relevant requirements.

Operators interviewed said the measure could help expand customer traffic in pet-friendly districts and malls, with some expecting revenue to rise and exploring the sale of pet food or partnerships with nearby pet-related retailers where permitted.
