The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has announced that, effective July 9, 2026, dogs will officially be permitted to enter approved food premises, ending Hong Kong's 30-year ban on pet dogs dining in restaurants. How will this new policy reshape the city? Will it create benefits for both pet owners and businesses, or will it bring new challenges? Today, we hit the streets of Hong Kong to capture the genuine sentiments of dog owners regarding this new regulation.

From escaping the high outdoor temperatures and enjoying the convenience of indoor dining to boosting Hong Kong's thriving "pet economy," dog owners have expressed enthusiastic welcome, stating they are "more than happy" and even calling it a significant "step forward" for Hong Kong. They believe that with Hong Kong's large dog-loving population, allowing dogs into eateries will enhance quality of life and create more business opportunities for merchants.

Naturally, some have pointed out that the ultimate decision will rest with the businesses themselves, and the "self-discipline" of owners will be crucial for the smooth implementation of this policy. Furthermore, this relaxation has sparked broader aspirations, such as hopes that dogs will eventually be able to travel on public transport like the MTR, enabling them to visit more places, or for more parks to open their doors to our furry friends, reflecting greater societal understanding and acceptance of life with pets.

What kind of landscape will this "human-dog dining" experiment ultimately paint for Hong Kong? Will it be the long-awaited new chapter of human-pet coexistence, or will it encounter more unforeseen challenges? Let's wait and see!
