The Standby Signal No. 1 and the Thunderstorm Warning remain in force, with the Hong Kong Observatory saying the tropical cyclone signal will remain in effect at least until 6 p.m. on Friday (July 3).
The Observatory said that over the past two to three hours, Tropical Cyclone Maysak had begun tracking northwestward toward Hainan Island while remaining a considerable distance from HK. The No. 1 Signal will stay in force until at least 6 p.m. local time.
The weather forecaster will then assess whether to issue the Strong Wind Signal No. 3, taking into account changes in Maysak's intensity, the distance between its area of strong winds and the Pearl River Estuary, as well as local wind conditions.
Strong winds were reported intermittently over offshore waters and on high ground in HK on Friday morning. Meanwhile, outer rainbands associated with Maysak are affecting the coast of Guangdong, bringing squally showers and thunderstorms to the region.
The Observatory also warned that swells are affecting local waters, urging the public to stay away from the shoreline, suspend all water activities and pay close attention to the latest weather updates.
