The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) said a tropical depression over the central South China Sea has entered within 800 kilometres of HK and that Standby Signal No. 1 will be issued on the morning of Thursday (July 2).

The Observatory expects the tropical cyclone to move generally towards Hainan Island and the Beibu Wan on Thursday and Friday (July 2 and 3), while remaining at least 400 kilometres away from HK.

Under its influence, winds in HK are expected to strengthen on Friday, with weather conditions gradually becoming unsettled. Swells are expected at sea, while squally showers will become more frequent, with heavier rainfall affecting some areas. Owing to the influence of local terrain, gale-force winds may occur briefly over some high ground.

The Observatory said that as the tropical cyclone makes landfall along the western coast of South China over the weekend (July 4 to 5), weather conditions in HK will gradually come under the influence of an active southwesterly airstream. Winds are expected to remain relatively strong, with occasional showers and squally thunderstorms.

The public is advised to pay close attention to the latest weather updates issued by the HKO. Those planning outdoor activities, especially water sports and other marine activities, should closely monitor changing weather conditions and exercise caution.
