South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has officially appointed Han Seong-sook as the country's new prime minister.
The president presented Han with a certificate of appointment at Cheong Wa Dae on Wednesday morning. In a press notice Tuesday night, chief presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said Lee approved the National Assembly's confirmation motion for Han after it passed parliament without consent from the main opposition People Power Party(PPP). The Assembly passed the motion during a plenary session, with 166 of the 167 lawmakers in attendance voting in favor. The PPP boycotted the vote, taking issue with Han's decision to sell multiple homes just before her confirmation hearing, her history of housing transactions at below-market prices under questionable circumstances, and a data breach involving a state startup program. Han, who has served as the minister of SMEs and startups, is the administration's second prime minister, after Kim Min-seok, and the country's second female prime minister — after Han Myeong-sook, who took office in 2006.
