The ruling Serbian Progressive Party held a large rally in the centre of the capital, Belgrade. Speaking at the event, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he would remain in office for several more weeks and then resign. He added that he would contribute to securing public trust for the Progressive Party and its leader, Milos Vucevic, in the upcoming elections.

According to Reuters, Vucic did not specify an exact date for his resignation. The report cited analysts who suggested that Vucic is unlikely to withdraw completely from politics. If his party wins the parliamentary elections, he could instead become prime minister, thereby maintaining effective control over power. Analysts also believe that Vucic will probably back an ally as his presidential successor in order to preserve the existing power structure.

In a recent local interview, Vucic had already stated that he planned to step down as president, with the presidential election expected to take place within three to four months.

Vucic was first elected president in April 2017 and re-elected in May 2022. Under the Serbian Constitution, the president serves a five‑year term and is eligible for one re‑election.
